You've pulled an incredible card. The centering looks good, the surface is clean, and you're thinking about sending it off for professional grading. But between now and submission day, how you store that card could be the difference between a 9 and a perfect 10.
Professional grading from PSA, CGC, or BGS evaluates four main criteria: centering, corners, edges, and surface. Three of those four — corners, edges, and surface — are directly affected by how you handle and store the card after pulling it.
Here's how to get it right.
What Graders Actually Look For
Centering
This is the one factor you can't control through storage — centering is determined at the printing stage. Graders measure the border ratios on the front and back. Slight off-centering is common and usually still allows for a 9, but significant misalignment will cap your grade regardless of condition.
Corners
Graders examine all four corners under magnification. Even minor corner wear — a tiny white dot or a barely perceptible ding — can drop you from a 10 to a 9. Corners are the most vulnerable part of a card and the easiest to damage through careless handling or poor storage.
Edges
The edges along all four sides are checked for whitening, nicks, and irregularities. Rough handling, cards rubbing against each other, or sliding cards across hard surfaces can all cause edge wear.
Surface
Surface condition is arguably the trickiest category. Graders look for:
- Scratches — even micro-scratches invisible to the naked eye can be detected under angled light
- Print lines — factory defects in the printing process (not your fault, but they still count)
- Fingerprints and oils — handling a card with bare fingers can leave oils that show up under inspection
- Indentations — pressing on a card's surface, even gently, can leave marks
The Journey From Pack to Grading Slab
Step 1: Open Packs Carefully
The grading process starts the moment you open a pack. Avoid bending cards as you separate them, don't flick through them roughly, and keep your fingers away from the card surfaces. Some serious collectors wear cotton gloves during pack openings — it might seem extreme, but for high-value chase cards, it's a worthwhile precaution.
Step 2: Sleeve Immediately
The moment you identify a card worth grading, slide it into a penny sleeve or perfect fit sleeve. Don't set it down on a table surface first — even a clean-looking desk can have dust particles or grit that scratch the card surface.
Step 3: Top Load It
Place the sleeved card into a standard 35pt top loader. This provides the rigid protection that prevents bending, corner dings, and edge damage during storage. Make sure the top loader itself is clean and free of scratches on the interior.
Step 4: Store It Safely
This is where many collectors make mistakes. You've sleeved and top loaded the card — great. But then what? Common errors include:
- Stacking top loaders loosely in a drawer — they slide around, bump into each other, and can develop edge pressure marks
- Leaving cards in a hot car or near a window — heat and UV exposure can warp cards and fade surfaces
- Storing in humid environments — moisture causes warping that can be impossible to reverse
The ideal solution is a top loader binder that holds each card securely in its own pocket. Cards don't shift, rub against each other, or get exposed to the elements. And because the binder is designed for top loaders specifically, there's no awkward fitting or pressure on the cards.
Step 5: Use Card Savers for Submission
When it's time to actually submit to PSA or CGC, you'll typically need to transfer your card from a top loader to a Card Saver (a semi-rigid holder that grading companies prefer for submission). This transfer should be done carefully:
- Work on a clean, soft surface
- Slide the card out gently — don't force it
- Inspect the card one final time under good lighting before placing it in the Card Saver
